The Honest Answer About Weed Control Programs
One of the more common conversations we have with Richmond and Glen Allen homeowners in July sounds something like this: I have been on your program for two years and I still have weeds coming up in summer. What is going on?
The honest answer is that herbicide programs reduce weed pressure but do not eliminate it. The treatments are one part of weed control. The bigger part is what happens to the turf itself between treatments. A thick, healthy, properly mowed fescue lawn outcompetes most weeds without much chemical help. A thin, stressed, short-mowed lawn lets weeds in no matter how many treatments you apply.
The 5 Causes of Ongoing Summer Weed Pressure
1. Thin Turf Leaves Open Ground for Weed Seeds
Weed seeds are in every lawn soil profile in our area. Crabgrass, nutsedge, doveweed, and spurge have seed banks that stay viable for years. They need warm soil, moisture, and sunlight at the soil surface — the third is exactly what thick turf prevents. A healthy fescue canopy mowed at 4 inches blocks 80–90% of sunlight from reaching the soil. The fix is density, not herbicide.
2. Mowing Too Short Helps Weeds More Than the Lawn
This is the single most common contributor to summer weed pressure we see on Richmond fescue lawns. Short fescue lets sun reach the soil. Sun on bare soil grows crabgrass. Lawns mowed at 2 inches have several times the crabgrass density of lawns mowed at 4 inches. The fix is mowing at 4 inches through June, July, and August.
3. Irrigation Patterns That Favor Weeds Over Turf
Light daily watering favors crabgrass, nutsedge, and most summer weeds. Deep infrequent watering favors fescue. A daily 10-minute irrigation cycle creates exactly the conditions crabgrass wants. The fix is two cycles per week of about half an inch each, applied early in the morning. The surface soil dries between cycles, which is hostile to crabgrass germination.
4. Depleted Soil Fescue Cannot Thrive In
Several Richmond area soils are not great for fescue without amendment. Fescue needs 3–5% organic matter, adequate phosphorus and potassium, pH of 6.0–6.8, and soil structure that lets roots reach 6–8 inches deep. Many summer weeds tolerate poor soil better than fescue does. The fix is soil testing and amendment — a standard soil test through the local extension office costs $15–$20.
5. Summer Herbicide Options Are Genuinely Limited
Most common broadleaf herbicides (2,4-D, dicamba, MCPP) cannot be applied above 85°F on cool-season grasses without significant risk of damaging the lawn. In Richmond's July weather we routinely have stretches of 3–4 weeks where every day is above the temperature threshold. The active broadleaf treatment window runs from late September through early June. Summer weed pressure is not something you can spray your way out of.
What an Honest Weed Control Program Looks Like
The weed control conversation is layered across the whole year, not focused on summer. The lawn that looks weed-free in July does that because of what happened in March, April, October, and last November combined with cultural practices in summer.
Early Spring (March)
Pre-emergent for crabgrass and other summer annuals. This is the highest-leverage application in the calendar — effective pre-emergent in March cuts summer crabgrass pressure by 80–90%.
Late Spring (April–May)
Broadleaf cleanup on winter annual weeds and early-emerging perennial weeds while temperatures allow safe application.
Summer (June–August)
Cultural focus: mowing height, watering pattern, fertility decisions, disease control, insect monitoring. Spot treatment of nutsedge with summer-safe products as needed. No broad spray applications.
Early Fall (September)
Renovation work: aeration, overseed, starter fertilizer. New seedlings establishing to thicken the canopy for next summer.
Late Fall (October–November)
Broadleaf application targeting winter annuals before they establish. This is the most effective broadleaf timing in the entire year.
The Cultural Practices That Make the Real Difference
Soil work, proper mowing, and smart irrigation are the slowest part of weed control because the changes take years to fully express. But lawns where we have been improving soil for three or more years have meaningfully less weed pressure than lawns where soil is unaddressed — even when both are on the same herbicide program. Density comes from proper fall renovation, healthy soil, and the right cultural practices in summer.
Key Soil Targets for Richmond Fescue
pH 6.0–6.8
Most native Richmond soils run 5.0–5.8, below the fescue target. Lime applications of 40–60 lbs per 1,000 sq ft bring pH up over 6–12 months.
3–5% Organic Matter
Compost topdressing of a quarter inch every fall builds organic matter steadily over multiple years, improving soil structure and turf health.
6–8 Inch Roots
Core aeration once or twice a year improves soil structure so fescue roots can reach the depth needed to withstand summer stress and compete with weeds.
